This week I wanted to share how I made these DIY frames for my staircase wall. They’re pretty easy to make, inexpensive, and I get tons of compliments on them! So here we go.
Supplies:
– Five 8×10 black picture frames
– 15 feet of black chain from Home Improvement store
– 5 wooden craft cricles
– 5 wooden craft balls
– 10 eye hooks
– Black paint
– Nail gun & compressor
– 5 screws
Let me start out by saying that I originally wanted to make these using curtain rod finials. I searched for days trying to find black finials that were the right size with no luck. So I resorted to making my own. I told myself that even IF I had found some, they were going to be much more expensive than making them myself. So alas, I went to JoAnn and found these two pieces of craft wood in order to mimic a finial.
I bought 5 balls and 5 circle disks. I don’t know why, but the balls had flat sides to them and it couldn’t have worked out more perfect for attaching them to the circle to look like a finial.
I brought them home and painted them with a few coats standard black house paint.
Next, I drilled a screw through the front side of the circle disks. This is how I was going to later attach them to the wall. It’s very important that you drill the screw through the disk before you attach the circle ball to it. Otherwise you can’t go back.
Then I used my nail gun and finishing nails to attach the circle disk to the ball. I centered the ball on the disk and put a nail through the back side of the disk going into the center of the ball. The diagram below explains.
After the “finials” were made, I attached the black chain to the frames. I bought 15 feet of small black chain from Home Depot, 3 feet for each frame. I also bought 5 black frames from Wal-Mart. I used 8×10’s.
To attach the chain to the tops of the frames, I used these eye hooks from any home improvement store. Or in my case, lying around the house. I painted them black to blend in with the frame and chain.
I screwed them in by hand to the tops of the frames, about 2 inches in, and then using pliers, attached the chain to each hook.
Then I screwed my “finials” into the wall about 18″ apart and finally hung the frames over them by the chain.
Here they are with our honeymoon pictures hung in the front foyer/stair wall. I love these because I can change the pictures out with something different if I want to later on!
Let me know what you guys think. Pretty easy, right? Is this something you would do in your home? In a hallway maybe?
