In almost every DIY project I complete, I do this DIY $40 IKEA Curtain Hack! It is so affordable and looks great in every space you can think of. I use the 118″ IKEA Ritva curtains – in a few easy steps I doctor them up to make them look completely custom.
Below is the step-by-step tutorial on how I make the curtains look gorgeous in every bedroom I makeover.
Step 1: Hang Curtain Rod
Always make sure that you hang the curtain rod as close to the ceiling as possible. This makes the windows look bigger than they really are. Our goal is for the curtains to barely kiss the floor. You’ll want to use these drywall anchors.
Sharing two of my favorite curtains rods below:
Step 2: Iron
The IKEA Ritva curtains are my go-to ones. I get the white color and 118″ length. I always iron the curtains with water and steam really well to make sure they look perfect with no creases. I’ll be honest… this part isn’t my favorite and it takes a long time, but it’s so worth it in the end.
You might be wondering why I only spent $40 on curtains, so let me tell you! Before discovering these from IKEA, I bought super expensive curtains from Ballard. I loved them, but not for $1200! These are just as good and now I can save my splurge money for something else.
Step 3: Add Drapery Hooks & Rings
Then, I use 10 of these drapery hooks from Amazon which will attach to the rings.
Next, use any curtain ring and remove the clip if it has one. Here are some curtain rings I’ve used and loved:
When hanging the rings, use the drapery hooks that are attached.
Step 4: Hem
Curtains can be hung so many different ways, but I personally like mine to just kiss the floor, so I hang them up and go through with paperclips to pin them to my desired length. Simply flip the curtains up and fold them to the length that is just above the floor – this is where those paperclips come in!
Then, take them down and cut the excess. After you finish cutting, use iron-on hem tape and iron into the fold.
The curtains should lay like this if done correctly.
