Stacked Kitchen Cabinets – The Plans

I just recently started a project I’ve had plans of doing for 2 and a half years now.  Yes, that’s even before our new house was built!  The minute we signed the contract on our new build and I perused model homes, I knew my dream kitchen would include stacked kitchen cabinets all the way around the kitchen.  The problem?  It wasn’t in our budget to do with the builder so it got put on the back burner while we saved.

Fast forward and we are coming up on our 2 year anniversary of being in this house next month.  We’ve saved, I’ve done tons of research, and it’s finally time to complete my dream kitchen that I’ve been waiting so long for! DIY style, of course!

Our Kitchen 2 years ago

Here’s a reminder of our kitchen the day we moved in.  Don’t get me wrong, its absolutely beautiful and I love it, but to me, it was SO far from finished.  I had so many plans and so many things to add to reflect my style. And you can see I opted to get 2 stacked cabinets flanking the cooktop through our builder. I really thought it completed that focal point, and since it was only 2 single cabinets, it didn’t break the bank. But I need ELEVEN more to complete the perimeter.

Our Kitchen Today

Here’s my kitchen today.  You can get caught up on all the things I’ve added since we moved in by reading this post here.  The only thing it’s missing is the rest of my stacked kitchen cabinets. 🙂

How will I add cabinets that match what I have?

The cabinets in my kitchen supplied by the builder are manufactured by Timberlake Cabinets.  They are distributed by Home Depot under the name American Woodmark.  So I am able to order my exact cabinets in custom dimensions to add on top of my existing cabinets for an exact match!  Uh-mazing, right?!  If your home is relatively new I suggest checking to see if Home Depot carries your cabinet style.

How much will it cost to add stacked kitchen cabinets?

I met with the most awesome kitchen designer at Home Depot, Robin. She helped guide me through the process of ordering all the things I needed to do this project. From the cabinets themselves, to the fillers, the trim, and the crown! And since I plan on installing everything myself, I only paid for materials and am saving THOUSANDS on the install! Win! Speaking of the materials, the cabinets along with all of the other miscellaneous parts cost right at 2 thousand. I bought several extra pieces of crown and trim to have on hand as backup but hopefully I’ll be able to return some and it’ll cost even less!

She designed and printed up these 3D renderings of what the cabinets will look like which I thought was neat! I chose to go with all solid doors for these uppers. I already have 2 glass doors in the kitchen and 4 glass doors in the adjacent breakfast nook!

Since my kitchen already has the two stacked cabinets I mentioned above, I am using them as a guide on how to install the rest. I want them to all look the same and like they were there from the beginning. The most difficult part of the planning and ordering process was figuring out that divider/trim piece you see in between the two cabinets.

Robin helped me search through her trim box, and BAM we found it!

What cabinets do I have?

And if you’re curious, this is the exact door style of my cabinets. The Glen Ellen by American Woodmark. Fun fact, they’re not actually wood. They’re a new material called Duraform that’s only been around a few years! Here’s a snippet I found online that helps describe them: “The new Duraform cabinets provide the popular look of paint, consistent color and a durable easy-to-clean finish. The foils and coatings are bonded to composite wood to create cabinets that are highly resistant to warping, heat, humidity and fading.”

Robin got everything ordered for me, and they arrived about 4 weeks later. I’m in the process of installing it all now so stay tuned! And make sure you follow me on instagram for daily updates and progress!

A final look at what to expect. In this shot you can see all 3 sides, and soon the left and the right side will have stacked cabinets all the way across to match the center ones!
