I’ve been promising this post for a while now and it’s finally here. I finished an amazing DIY sideboard for my mom’s new house shortly after I finished this sideboard for my friend Heather. My mom has always loved the sideboard in my home that I use as my TV stand, and asked that I build a similar one for her. She has a large TV nook in her living room and wanted a 100″ piece to go under her TV. She also wanted to add some interest and details to the doors so it didn’t look so similar to mine. I was up for the challenge!
I won’t post all of the details about the building process, because it’s identical to the ones I’ve built in the past that I’ve posted about here & here. But I will say that I used these plans to build it if you want to give it a try!
The only thing different about this DIY sideboard from the ones I’ve built in the past are the doors. And boy do they make a statement. Seriously so gorgeous I can barely handle it. I searched online high and low and discovered O’verlays. I emailed them explaining my project and asked if they could make custom overlays to fit my moms sideboard and I was beyond excited when they wrote back that they could make them in any size and any design. I immediately sent them our inspiration picture and they created these 3 design options for me to choose from. I went with option B.
When they arrived at my house, I had already finished building the doors and couldn’t wait to add this fun detail. They come in a true white color and are paintable! The picture below is before I painted them. To be honest with you, I’m not 100% sure what they are made of but it reminds me of a melamine type material. They are flexible and super lightweight.
I painted them Dover White by Sherwin Williams to match the sideboard and attached them to the inset of the door with a small dab of wood glue. I love how snug and perfect they fit in the doors and how they give the entire piece such a beautiful, custom look!
Since the doors had a beautiful, but somewhat busy, design, I opted to go with a simple gold knob from wayfair. I attached the doors and here is the finished sideboard!
Isn’t she just beautiful!?
I finished the inside shelves off with some melamine banding (found here) to give the shelves a beautiful finished edge.
So tell me, what do you think of the DIY sideboard and doors? I love the elegance it brings to a traditional piece. Comment and let me know your questions, I love hearing from you guys!
