Mixing Old & New Furniture

I had been wanting to give my master bedroom a makeover ever since we moved into our new house.  But obviously buying all new furniture was pretty unrealistic.  I couldn’t easily come up with an excuse for the hubs as to why I needed all new furniture considering there was nothing wrong with the current stuff.  So I pushed it down on the list.

Except one day while I was browsing through this antique shop (it’s next door to the dog’s groomer so I peek in every time I take Bruiser to the groomer) I found these night stands.  I fell in love with them immediately but thought “theres no way I can afford these and no way am I convincing the hubs I need them”.  For giggles I asked a staff member how much they cost since there was no tag.  She came back and said “they’re 40 dollars”.  After I picked my jaw up off the floor I had to repeat back what she just said, “you mean 40 for each, so $80 for both of them?”.  As quick as she said “yes” I said “I’ll take them.”  For $80 there wasn’t much explaining I had to do at home.

So home with me they came.  They sat in the garage for a couple months.  Yes, months.  Very unlike me since I’m so impatient but they didn’t match my current furniture at all and they would look totally out of place.  But I knew they would match the direction I wanted to take my new master bedroom in.  Here’s a picture of my master bedroom dressers.  The OH-SO-Famous IKEA Hemnes 6 drawer chest and 8 drawer dresser.

They have that pretty modern look like everything else at IKEA.  And now I had “new” antique night stands.  Did I want new dressers to match my night stands?  Of course I did.  But that was completely unrealistic.  So I decided to give my dressers a simple upgrade that made a huge difference in my opinion.  New knobs were the answer.  Here were the knobs before (that they came with).

And here’s more close ups of the night stand knobs I wanted to match them to.  The color of the night stands are mostly gray with a hint of green, and clearly photograph in both colors.

I went shopping at Home Depot for knobs to match those.  The “popular” knobs out there are the modern, silver, sleek ones and they cost $$$.  Ironically I was trying to find gold, antique ones which are the cheapest ones in the aisle.  Score!  I found these knobs that match pretty darn well for only a $1.28 each.

So I bought 26.  12 for each dresser and 2 for the closet doors.  For a total of only $35.  Here’s the new look of the dressers with the new knobs.

And here are the same knobs on the closet doors.

I think it gives them a whole new look and ties in my modern dressers with my antique night stands for a small price tag.  It’s a heck of a lot better than spending $$$$$ on all new dressers, which allowed me to buy some new accessories for the room.  More details on my master bedroom makeover coming soon!
